Post-industrial Bodies
Exhibition: Lasalle Graduation Show
Year: 2021
I am interested in how the human body internalises the external influences of the material world and social systems humans live in, especially that of the working environment. As Singapore shifts into a post-industrial era, the way people work, and the relationship between mankind and nature changes. The modern machine no longer stands for a miracle of automation but is now a symbol of a larger biological power that invisibly takes control of our work and lives.
Post-industrial Bodies uses objects from the central air-conditioning system - one of the most symbolic machines in postindustrial Singapore - as a medium. This work attempt to examine how the human body tries to meet the needs of society, rather than its own functionality. This serves as a metaphor of the reciprocal assimilative relationship between our bodies and the material world around us.
